The Dean Forest line is part of the Severn and Wye Railway, which was jointly operated by the Midland and the GWR and was closed to passenger services as long ago as 1929, remaining open for mineral traffic until 1976. From a steam centre at the site of the former Norchard colliery, the DFR has extended in stages south to Lydney Junction where there is a connection with the Gloucester to South Wales main line, and north through the forest to Parkend, which reopened in March 2006.
